Some recently completed projects:

Colston`s Boys School

As a result of building a new school hall (architects Stride Treglown Ltd) an opportunity rose to create a new quad. This included new paths and `bunding`, planting and seating and two new roundabouts within the school grounds, both of which act as a focus and a hub for the school community.

Circulation both on foot and for the few vehicles in the grounds are considerably improved, as well as making the heart of the school more attractive and comfortable.

This was achieved by a combination of studying and acting on patterns of movement, opening up spaces to create gathering points, and providing seating, and planting to be enjoyed throughout the year, and increasingly as the plants mature to create green rooms, and a sense of well being.

Chinese Medicinal Herb Garden at the University of Bristol Botanic Garden

The idea of a teaching garden where herbs used in Chinese medicine would be displayed, was a result of a collaboration between Nicholas Wray, superintendent of the Bristol University Botanic Garden, and Tony Harrison, Chinese herbalist and teacher.

Alex Johnson Landscape Design was commissioned to design the garden where the herbs could be displayed in natural and authentic surroundings.

The design includes a bamboo wall with a moongate, a large rock feature and slate paving. Exhaustive research and trials were carried out to establish a method for bending bamboo for the moongate.

In 2005, the entire Botanic Garden was moved to a new site at the Holmes in Stoke Bishop, where the Chinese Medicinal Herb Garden will be reconstructed.

Cotham School

This central courtyard at the school is both a meeting point and a crossroads.

A desire to calm down the atmosphere and create social spaces resulted in this design using robust timber and aromatic plants. It has been judged a great success by students and staff alike.
