The idea of a teaching garden where herbs used in Chinese medicine would be displayed, was a result of a collaboration between Nicholas Wray, curator of the Bristol University Botanic Garden, and Tony Harrison, Chinese herbalist and teacher.
Alex Johnson Landscape Design was commissioned to design the garden where the herbs could be displayed in natural and authentic surroundings.
The design includes a bamboo wall with a moongate, a large rock feature and slate paving. Exhaustive research and trials were carried out to establish a method for bending bamboo for the moongate.
In 2005, the entire Botanic Garden was moved to a new site at the Holmes in Stoke Bishop, where the Chinese Medicinal Herb Garden has been reconstructed.
